The vacuum tube units used at our scales will be replaced starting in summer 2024. It is not a big project, but one that customers will appreciate, as the existing units keep breaking down, which leads to long lines and wait times.
Plans are also underway to construct a new maintenance shop at the facility, providing an all-weather location for staff to repair equipment.

The Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) is the location where all residential single stream recyclables get processed into their individual components, such as plastic bottles and corrugated cardboard. The equipment at the MRF is requires upgrades, which will necessitate closing the facility temporarily.
Mecklenburg County has contracted with Van Dyk Recycling Systems to supply all new equipment to the MRF. This MRF Retrofit project is anticipated to take about one year. During that time, the County will process recyclables at the Interim MRF being built near the Hickory Grove Recycling Center on Pence Road, slated to open in March 2025.

The Interim Materials Recycling Facility (Multi Materials Processing Facility) is being constructed near the Hickory Grove Recycling Center. It will be used to process single stream recyclables while the main MRF is being retrofitted with new equipment. The site will not be available for residential drop-off; rather, it is the large commercial processing facility handling much of our curbside recyclables.
Mecklenburg County has contracted with Bulk Handling Systems to supply separation equipment for the components of this automated system. Solid Waste has worked to add a new railroad crossing across the Aberdeen and Western Railway tracks to provide access to this new location. The County is also working to add rail sidings at this location for future needs for transportation of materials.
The site development work has been awarded to Ground Thunder Construction to add pavement and site utilities.
This facility is anticipated to open in March 2025.
