Residential Questions

Mecklenburg County DOES NOT collect the curbside materials. Instead, the County processes the materials at the Metrolina Recycling Facility. The collection at your home is the responsibility of the municipality in which you live. If you live in an unincorporated area of Mecklenburg County and you desire curbside collection, contract a licensed hauler.

Mecklenburg County does not collect curbside trash or recycling. Curbside collection is performed by the City of Charlotte or one of the towns. If you live in an unincorporated area of Mecklenburg County, and you desire curbside collection, you will need to contact a residential hauling company. Mecklenburg County is comprised of 6 Towns and the unincorporated area of Mecklenburg County. The 6 Towns are: City of Charlotte and the Towns of: Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Pineville, Mint Hill, and Matthews. Curbside collection (trash and recycling) occurs at most residential homes in Mecklenburg County. Other services, such as bulky waste collection and yard waste collection may be provided by contact the respective Town Hall. If you live in an unincorporated area of Mecklenburg County, and you desire curbside collection, you will need to contact a residential hauling company.

Curbside collection is processed at the County’s Metrolina Recycling Facility. Acceptable curbside collection materials can be found by visiting: What Can I Recycle Curbside?

Residents of Mecklenburg County can recycle and/or dispose more items at the Full-Service Drop-Off Centers. Residents of Mecklenburg County may also bring recyclables to the staffed Self-Service Centers. These Centers will only accept cardboard, cans, cartons, paper, glass bottles, and plastic bottles & jugs with necks.

Foxhole Disposal & Recycling Center is located at 17131 Lancaster Highway, Charlotte, NC, 28277.

Hickory Grove Disposal & Recycling Center is located at 8007 Pence Road, Charlotte, NC, 28215.

Compost Central Disposal & Recycling Center is located at 140 Valleydale Road, Charlotte, NC, 28214.

North Mecklenburg Disposal & Recycling Center is located at 12300 N. Statesville Road, Huntersville, NC, 28078.

Paper shredding events are held every 3rd Saturday at Compost Central Recycling Center in the Spring (March-June) and Fall (September-November). Time slots will open on the first day of each month.

There are only 6 items you can recycle curbside in Mecklenburg County. That's cardboard, cans, cartons, paper, glass bottles, and plastic bottles & jugs with necks. Refer to the acceptable list on our Recycle Right Curbside Pickup page.

Enhanced Recycling are the newest recyclable items accepted only at the Full-Service Recycling Centers. These items that should not be placed in a curbside bin include:

Commercial Questions

Any business that generates 16 cubic yards or more of trash per week and has more than 500 pounds of corrugated cardboard and/or 500 pounds of office paper per month, must recycle the cardboard and/or office paper. There are exemptions to this rule.

Mecklenburg County DOES NOT collect curbside trash or recycling. If your company desires collection services, you will need to contract a private hauling company. See our list of approved haulers.

Mecklenburg County offers commercial drop-off centers, as well as Full-Service Centers, and Self-Service Recycling Centers. Businesses may choose to contract trash and recycling services with a private hauling company or self-haul recycling and trash to any of the four Full-Service Centers. Fees and size limitations apply.

Items such as dimensional lumber, plywood, brick, block, carpet and padding, shingles, windows, doors, fiberglass bath fixtures, tile, ceramic etc. that come from the construction or tear down of a structure.

This usually depends on the hauler for your business and the where the hauler deposits the recyclables from the business.

Most businesses in Mecklenburg County can recycle: cardboard, cans, cartons, paper, glass bottles, and plastic bottles & jugs with necks.

Mecklenburg County cannot accept hazardous materials or waste from businesses, organizations, or non-profits, unless they qualify as a Very Small Quantity Generator. These special collections are held on specific dates throughout the year and business must pre-register. The ABC Recycling Law requires the recycling of bottles and glass from entities that hold an ABC License.

It applies to:

on-premises malt beverage permits
on-premises unfortified wine permits
mixed beverae permits
on-premises fortified wine permits
